Training Programs

Aim to give yourself at least three to four weeks to get up to speed before race day arrives. Consistency is more important than how far or how fast your training runs are. A good rule of thumb is to try and get out for at least 20 minutes every other day. Should you need extra motivation to get your miles in, the Striders host open group runs on Tue. and Thur. evenings, Sat. morning, and Sun. morning. Scheduling and times can be found here, all are free to join.

If a bit more structure and motivation is needed, consider signing up for our Santa Fe Run Around training program - Running 101 - which begins in April and leads right up to race day.

  • Running 101 classes will begin Thursday April 10th. This program includes six weeks of 5K specific training and conditioning concluding on race day, Saturday May 17th. Classes will be coached by the unstoppable Carol Davenport of The Running Hub on Thursday evenings. Included with the classes are an entry to the Run Around and one 2014 annual membership to the Santa Fe Striders. Cost is $100. Further details and a Running 101 registration form may be found here.

  • There will also be a beginners running class for kids which starts Monday April 21st. It includes four weeks of running basics and some 5K specific training and conditioning concluding on race day May 17th. This program will also include one entry to the Run Around as well as an annual membership to the Striders. Kids Running 101 will be coached by Mariam Browne our intrepid director of the Striders' junior running program. Cost is $25. Details for the Youth running program and coach bio may be found here (dated 2013, but other details and coaches bio are unchanged).
